Plants, including corn, produce food and oxygen from light, energy, carbon dioxide and water. This chemical reaction, photosynthesis, is very important for life on the planet. The impacts are primarily in food production and oxygen required for cellular respiration, but also in the fixation of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere which reduces this greenhouse gas. In the U.S., corn production removes 800 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. Cover crops and other farming practices can help retain more of this carbon in the soil. In this lab, students will indirectly measure the production of oxygen during photosynthesis and can use this technique to test the impact of variables on the rate of photosynthesis.
